Ohio's 2010-2011 Mr. Basketball - Trey Burke
Northland High School has grown into the new training ground for Ohio's elite basketball talent. In 2009 and 2010, Jared Sullinger earned Ohio's Mr. Basketball award from the Associated Press. In 2010, Sullinger was named the Naismith National High School Player of the Year.
But now, the trophy case at Northland will feature a new name.
Northland senior guard Trey Burke was named the 2011 Mr. Basketball winner Wednesday night by the Ohio AP. Burke, the 24th Mr. Basketball in state history, averaged nearly 24 points per game in his senior season. It was his first high school season without players like Sullinger or fellow Buckeye J.D. Weatherspoon on the floor with him.
"I've learned how to play with great players---D-I guys---and make them better." Burke says.
In addition to his talent, Burke, a 6'1 guard, is also a brave young man in Columbus. Burke will head to Michigan next season. He and his family proudly wear their Michigan gear to school and at games.
Burke led Northland to the state's #1 ranking in Division I this season, and Friday the Vikings face Garfield Heights in the D-I Semifinals at the State Tournament in Columbus. Northland won the State Championship in 2009, when Burke was a sophomore.
